Does This Sound Familiar?

I don’t know where to start.

I have ideas, but I can’t get them onto the page.

I’m just not a good writer.

I already wrote it. What more does my teacher want?

I don’t understand what analyze means.

My teacher says ‘go deeper,’ but I don’t know how.

I stare at a blank page forever.

I know what I want to say. I just can’t say it.

Main Intro

Writing often feels frustrating because students are expected to produce something without ever being shown clearly how the process works. Strong writing is not simply something a person is born knowing how to do. It is a skill. Students can learn how to organize ideas, develop an argument, support it with evidence, explain their thinking and revise their work. Once the process becomes visible, writing becomes much less intimidating.

Writing Philosophy

Great writing is not about memorizing a formula. Students first need to understand the structure underneath strong writing. Once they understand thesis, evidence, analysis, organization and transitions, they can adapt that structure to their own ideas and develop an original voice. Understanding structure is what eventually gives students the freedom to be creative.
