Clear Explanations. Smarter Strategies. A Plan That Fits You.

At Clearline Tutoring, students receive focused, personalized instruction built around how they actually learn. With over 15 years of experience and more than 10,000 hours of tutoring, I’ve developed a teaching approach that emphasizes clarity, structure, and results.

I offer four small-group classes: Middle School Essay Writing, Algebra 1, SAT Foundations, and SAT Skill Spotlight, which focuses on a different critical SAT skill each week.

Every student works directly with me, and class size are intentionally kept small so I can provide the kind of individual attention that is often missing in a traditional classroom. We can address homework, strengthen areas of weakness, and tailor instruction to each student’s needs.

I started tutoring on a lark and quickly discovered that I love explaining things. But it’s not really just about explaining things. It’s about helping people get where they’re going and sharing a moment in time with them as they work toward something important. I find that process fun, exciting, and endlessly fascinating.

One thing that always vexed me early in my own learning journey was struggling with something, sometimes for hours, only to eventually discover that it was actually quite simple. It just hadn’t been explained simply. Being the person who can help a student have that moment of realization, and find a quick, intuitive way to understand something that had seemed impossibly complicated, is an amazing feeling.

I also believe that learning works better when there is some joy in it. When students are having fun, they’re more engaged, more curious, and more willing to wrestle with something they don’t immediately understand. That doesn’t mean they have to love algebra, grammar, or every SAT question. Part of my job is helping them see why learning one particular thing can help them in so many other ways, and why even something they don’t particularly enjoy can still be an exciting part of where they’re going.

That also means finding explanations that are unique to the student. I’m always looking for a way to connect an idea to how that particular student sees the world, sometimes in a way that is funny, unexpected, or completely different from how it appears in a textbook. Teaching isn’t simply repeating the same explanation until a student understands it. Sometimes you have to reimagine the idea from an entirely new perspective.

That process keeps teaching exciting for me, too. Every student forces me to think a little differently, find a new explanation, and continue learning as an educator. Helping students find easier, clearer ways to understand things and move forward in their own journeys has become my life’s passion. Without passion, none of this works.

My Process

My process starts with listening to students and parents. How much help a student needs, and what kind of help will actually make a difference, has to be guided largely by them. They’re the ones living their lives 24/7. I only enter the equation for a relatively brief amount of time, so I need to understand their particular circumstances and what they actually need from me.

That might mean helping with a single confusing homework problem, getting a student caught up in a class, building confidence in a subject they’ve struggled with for years, or mastering a complex, multi-year course of study. There isn’t one approach that works for every student or every situation.
That’s why both my classes and individual tutoring are designed to be flexible. I listen first, figure out where the student is and where they’re trying to go, and then adapt my teaching to help them get there.

“Chris helped me bring my SAT score up to a 1480, which made a huge difference in my college applications. Beyond just the results, he really focuses on the specific strategies and ‘tricks’ needed to master the SAT, rather than just repetitive practice. He is incredibly patient, explains complex math and reading concepts in a way that is intuitive, and kept me motivated throughout the whole process. I highly recommend Clearline Tutoring for anyone that is looking for SAT.”

I used Chris with both of my sons, one for the SHSAT and my son aced it. For the other child, it was to improve his SAT score and that is exactly what he did. Chris is also laid back and has a easy going approach with teens. Highly recommend!
